Apple iPhone 3G
If you’re an iPhone fence-sitter, now’s the time. The addition of 3G and GPS, the affordable price tag, and extra features from the iPhone 2.0 software update make the iPhone 3G a worthy prospect. Unlike the previous iPhone, which we liked and recommended with reservations, we’re much happier with what this new handset has to offer. iPhone 3G isn’t perfect, but there’s a lot to like here and we approach the device with much anticipation. Even though AT&T requires a 2 year contract with new activations in the US, it seems some inventive folks have found a way around it and are offering unlocked iPhone 3G units for sale on eBay.

Nokia N95
When it comes to cool Nokia phones, the United States often is left out in the cold while our friends in Europe and Asia get all the goods. Well, it seems Nokia has heard our cries; the company has started selling more of its best handsets in North America. One model in particular has attracted a lot of attention, and that would be the Nokia N95. The demand for this smartphone has been so great that Nokia decided to release a North American Edition of the Nokia N95. For the most part, it’s very similar to the original version, but there are some major additions that make it a better buy, namely 3G support, more memory, longer battery life, and faster performance.

Motorola Z9
The good: The Motorola Z9 has a sharp design, a generous feature set, and satisfying music and video quality. But most of all, its call quality is outstanding.
The bad: The Z9’s 3G performance was variable. Also, its photo quality wasn’t as sharp as it could be.
The bottom line: The Z9 may not offer anything new but it’s a fine cell phone in all regards. It offers an attractive design, a great feature set, and superb call quality.

LG Decoy (VX8610)
The good: The LG Decoy comes with a built-in Bluetooth headset that stows away in the back of the phone. It has nice tactile keys, an easy-to-use interface, and features include a 2-megapixel camera, EV-DO, stereo Bluetooth, a music player, and V Cast support. It also has pretty good call quality. The Bluetooth headset also supports A2DP, so you can use it for calls as well as music.
The bad: The LG Decoy has a very glossy finish that makes it prone to smudges, and the display can be difficult to see under bright lights. The included Bluetooth headset has skinny volume controls, and does not have noise reduction or echo canceling technology.
The bottom line: The LG Decoy is an excellent phone on its own, but the addition of a built-in Bluetooth headset puts it over the top.

Unlocked Motorola Z3
The good: The Motorola Rizr Z3 has a striking design with a great display and navigation controls. It also offers decent call quality and a pleasing feature set.
The bad: The Motorola Rizr Z3 has shaky speakerphone quality, and the camera didn’t take the best pictures. Also, the microSD card slot is in an inconvenient location.
The bottom line: Motorola does a slim slider phone well with the attractive and well-performing GSM Rizr Z3.

Samsung Instict
To call the Samsung Instinct an iPhone knockoff would be an understatement of grotesque proportions. Seriously: Even the packaging looks like it came straight outta Cupertino.
With its buttonless face and black monolithic look, the all-touchscreen Instinct is immediately familiar: It’s virtually the same weight and size as the iPhone, only about two-tenths of an inch narrower. Most of the expected specs for any 2008 handset are here: 3G, GPS, 2-megapixel camera (with video recording), and full e-mail and web browsing features. But the Instinct doesn’t stop there; it tries to stake a claim on new ground by adding features its arch rival (even the upcoming version) skips: Haptic feedback buzzes below your fingertip when you work the touchscreen, and voice control lets you do certain tasks sans typing.
